What could be more patriotic than drinking a classic root beer with an American flag on the bottle? Americana is a line of “vintage sodas” that is distributed by Orca Beverages out of Mukilteo, WA. The bottle tells me that this soda is handcrafted and contains pure cane sugar as the sweetener. The Americana brands offers 6 flavors: Root Beer, Huckleberry, Honey Lime Ginger Ale, Black Cherry, Orange Cream, and Honey Cream (the last 2 I haven’t had yet). Below you will find my thoughts on each one of these classic soda pops!

Americana Root Beer
This root beer contains vanilla, licorice and sassafras root bark. When I first tasted it, I felt like “this is kind of ordinary”, but then those other flavors hit you and it’s like “woah, there is something to this root beer.” It’s kind of on the sweet side, so that may be a turn off to some people. The amount of carbonation as with all the Americana sodas was perfect.

Americana Black Cherry
This is actually the first Americana flavor I had and so it’s the one that got me to seek out the others. There are so many artificial tasting black cherry sodas out there, luckily this isn’t one of them. This is a good black cherry with a genuine cherry flavor, no cough medicine aftertaste here. I would like to compare this one side by side with Henry Weinhard’s Black Cherry Cream, which I did give a 5 star rating to.

Americana Honey Lime Ginger Ale
While Americana offers some of the traditional soda flavors, they also go outside the box, like with their Honey Lime Ginger Ale. I never would have thought of that combination, but they all work so well together. This drink is complex and delicious. The Ginger Ale itself is on the strong side, so I hope you like ginger ale!

Americana Huckleberry Soda
Another flavor you don’t see everyday is Huckleberry. It is a great flavor. It doesn’t taste artificial at all. It contains huckleberry and elderberry extracts. It is sweet without being overly so.

Final Thoughts
Americana is one of the best lines of soda pop I have ever had. Everything is either 4 or 5 stars. I haven’t tried the Orange Cream or Honey Cream yet, but I have high hopes for both of them.

Palestine Sweet Lime When someone thinks of a lime, that word sweet usually isn’t a part of the conversation. But it is for one certain variety of lime – the Palestine Sweet Lime. This lime isn’t your everyday lime. The most obvious think about this lime is that it is yellow. Limes are suppose to be green, so why is this one yellow? Actually I read that limes that are left on the trees will eventually turn yellow. The most sought after key limes are the ones that have some yellow in them. Most lime varieties are picked when they are green, but not the Palestine Sweet.

It’s easy to assume that a Palestine Sweet Lime is sweeter than other limes. This actually is not true. It’s just as sweet. Where the difference lies is that it is extremely low in acidity. There is no bite to this lime. You can actually peel and eat them just as you would any orange. Personally I am not a big fan of them. They just taste sweet to me. They do not have a strong lime flavor. The tartness of a lime is something desired when cooking with limes. But since they lack their tartness, they aren’t as effective in cooking procedures.

So what are these limes good for? They are can be a good option for those that are have trouble with the high amounts of acid that are in most citrus. I also hear that hot, humid day drinking the juice of these limes is a refreshing option.

Americana Honey Lime Ginger Ale Honey, lime, and ginger ale. Three flavors that I never thought about putting together. But the makers of Americana soda did. I have tried several of their flavors and they have all been top of the line. So I was expecting the same when it came to their Honey Lime Ginger Ale. The ingredient list reads like this: Carbonated Water, Cane Sugar, Extracts of Lime and Ginger, Honey, Citric Acid, Natural Flavors, Sodium Benzoate (Preserves Freshness). It’s always a good sign to see one of the flavors of a drink actually listed in the ingredient list.

5stars Americana has done it again. This is a delicious drink. All the flavors go so well together, giving this drink many dimensions of flavor. The lime and the honey make it so the ginger isn’t too over powering. I have seen lemon and honey together, especially in cough drop form, but I think the lime and honey combo works just as well if not better. The ginger taste lingers in your mouth, more so than most generic ginger ales. It’s not for the faint of heart, but if you love ginger ale, you need to give this a try.

Green River This week in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, I will be exploring different ways to enjoy the holiday, eating like no one else. Not all of our St. Patrick’s Day traditions in the United States are based on what the Irish eat or drink. This time of year anything that is green is send to the fore front at grocery stores and restaurants – good luck driving anywhere without seeing a sign for a McDonald’s Shamrock Shake). Green River is an example of one of those products. I have heard of it before but haven’t seen until I saw it on display at a local Meijer store. This soda is more widely distributed around St. Patrick’s Day, naturally because of it’s green color. Green River is lime flavored. It does contain actual lime oils. It is produced under the authority of the Green River Corporation of Chicago, Illinois and distributed by Clover Club Bottling Company also of Chicago. For more history about this soda, visit the Old 52 General Store blog.

4stars This is a very good lime soda pop. I like it better than any lime drink that also contains it’s lemon counterpart. I have never met a lime soda yet that I didn’t like better than a lemon-lime. It has a strong enough lime taste and the carbonation is right. I like it better than the Crush Lime that was around store shelves last fall. I don’t think it’s as good as Stewart’s Key Lime.

Where to Buy
A lot of chain stores carry it around St. Patrick’s Day. I found mine at a Meijer store.

Old 52 General Store Old 52 carries Green River in glass bottles year around. They also sell over 300 different flavors of glass bottled soda. Their physical store is located in Sabin, Minnesota.

December Citrus As the calendar turns to December and I watch a few snow flakes float to the ground outside my window here in Michigan, I say goodbye to the growing season. No more fresh fruit to enjoy from the farmer’s market, besides those apples varieties that have long shelf lives. However the good news is that it’s time for citrus! The local grocery stores are beginning to fill up with citrus shipped in from much warmer climates. So I decided to keep track on the site what citrus I am finding in stores each month. These are many varieties of oranges, grapefruit, and lemons to taste throughout the season. Lucky for me that season will take me right through to the spring. Anyway onto the list. I expect to update this list as the month goes on. I grouped the fruit by type.

Oranges/Mandarins/Tangerines
1. Crates of Clementines can be easily found now, going for $4.99-$5.99 a crate. These little mandarin oranges have become a Christmas time favorite. Although I think the best tasting Clementines wouldn’t appear until we are in the New Year. Some of the Clementines I have seen have been imported from Spain.

Satsuma Mandarin 2. Satsumas are another mandarin that can be found now. I purchased some at Whole Foods the other day. They were being sold for $1.69/lb. These are most likely the orange you would have had out of a can.

3. Of course Naval oranges can be found year round, but I haven’t seen any yet that were grown domestically. So I will wait until the California ones appear in my stores.

4. I found some Fall Glo tangerines at Plum Market in Ann Arbor. I didn’t really care for them, or at least the one I got to try. Just didn’t have a good flavor and they are seeded.

5. One of my favorite oranges, the Cara Cara Navel should be arriving in stores before the end of the month. The same goes for blood oranges.

Grapefruit
I am not a big fan of grapefruit, but I will track them as for the sake of the site. I have seen Ruby Red on sale for $.99/lb at Busch’s in Saline, Michigan.

Lemons
Meyer Lemons are now available. I purchased a bag at Kroger for $1.25. These lemons are can used just as any other lemon is. They are more sweet and less acidic. Check out what I wrote about them last year.

Limes
I have not seen anything but a traditional lime in my stores. We don’t get much in the way of variety of limes in my area.

Crush Lime I spend most of my time reviewing glass bottled soda on this website. But today I am going to make an exception. Recently I have been noticing lime flavored Crush appearing on grocery stores shelves all over town. I had never seen that flavor of Crush before. I heard before somewhere that this flavor was available in Canada but not in the states. However it will only be available in the US for a limited time. It doesn’t indicate that on the bottle. I found that out by visiting the Crush website.

3stars So how is Crush Lime? It’s good. Not the best lime flavored soda pop I have ever had, but it’s better than most things bottled by Dr. Pepper/7Up Inc. It has a nice lime flavor, but like most plastic bottle sodas, the amount of carbonation is too high. I actually like it better when it was a little on the flat side. Overall an enjoyable experience.

Where to Buy
I am finding it at all grocery store chains in my area. If you are trying to find it in your area check the company website’s product locator. Remember this is only available for a limited time so act fast.

Jones Limes with Orange I was really excited when I came across several beverages from the Jones Soda Company’s Naturals line at my local Big Lots. The flavor I will be reviewing today is Limes with Orange. The front of the 14 oz glass bottle says Orange, Tangerine, and Lime, and under that it says Natural Flavored Beverage with Vitamin C & Ginseng. The ingredient lists reads like this: Filtered Water, Inverted Cane Sugar, Orange Juice from Concentrate, Citric Acid, Natural Flavors, Pectin, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Ginseng Extract, Beta Carotene.

2stars The name of this drink really should be orange with a very slightly microscopic hint of limes. I just tasted mostly an orange flavor, which wasn’t all that strong either. It didn’t taste bad, it just lacked bite and for that it’s lacking stars in it’s rating.

Where to Buy
It was available at Panera Bread, but I don’t think you can find them there any longer. Big Lots is the only place that I know that have them. So if you see them at your local Big Lots, grab them up, as it might be your last chance.

Hansens Mandarin Lime

I was watching an episode of the History Channel’s Modern Marvels. The episode was on soft drink companies. One of the companies they looked at was Hansen’s. During that segment, they showed them producing their Mandarin Lime flavor. I was intrigued by it, so I went out to search for some to have my own taste test. Hansen’s sodas are considered natural. The ingredient is pretty basic stuff: carbonated water, pure cane sugar, citric acid, the natural flavors of the Yucatan mandarin and the Colima lime. There are no preservatives, sodium or caffeine.

4stars I have had some of the other Hansen’s drinks years ago and was never that impressed. But this flavor I like a lot. The flavor is subtle and texture is bubbly, almost too much carbonation for me. The of orange and lime flavors is unique. I would much rather have those flavors together than lemon and lime like a Sprite or 7UP.

Where to Buy
Trader Joe’s
Kroger (I don’t know about this exact flavor, but I have seen Hansen’s at Kroger before)

Zuberfizz Key Lime Cream Soda

The Durango Soda Company out of Durango, Colorado (makers of Coco Fizz Chocolate Soda) have crafted their Zuberfizz beverage line. Coming in a short neck bottle with a retro style label, these cream sodas promise that you will feel the fizz. The first flavor I got to try was their Key Lime cream soda. It was sweetened with pure cane sugar and contains vanillin.

2stars I really wanted to like this drink, but the aftertaste is what keeps it from being great. At first a nice creamy lime taste hits your tongue, but as it swirls around your mouth an artificial taste can be had. I thought the taste was similar to the Sonic Limeade Chillers available at Sonic Drive-Ins (except the Sonic Limeade Chiller doesn’t have the bad aftertaste). For a drink that says feel the fizz, you would expect something super carbonated and this wasn’t. Overall I think this was a nice attempt, that just feel short.

Stewart Key Lime

This is part of a series of posts on juices and unique drinks that I have come across. Everyone knows the Pepsis and Cokes of this world and many sites cover the wines and beers, but I am bringing to you the rest of the beverage world.

I have reviewed a couple other Stewart’s flavors on the website before (see the links at the bottom), today I am reviewing their key lime flavor. The clear glass bottles bears the words “smooth lime taste”, right along a picture of some limes (whole and sliced). The color is a little green and reminds of the honeydew popsicles I had as a kid.

4stars I tried this flavor because I read some positive reviews from other people online and my taste buds agree with those reviews. It has a strong lime flavor with no bad artifical aftertaste. The carbonation is right on too. The experience is like drinking a carbonated limeaide that is on the sweeter side. With Stewart’s it seems to be either hit or miss, key lime is a hit.
