Fruit Spotlight - Cherries

Spring time means the beginning of cherry season. Let me take you through the season from start to finish.

Fresh cherry season begins with California grown cherries.

Prices are expensive until Bing cherries are available, then they go down.

Washington produces the most cherries. Their season begins in June.

Sweet Rainier cherries are at their peak around the 4th of July.

You may be able go cherry picking locally in late June through July depending on your region.

Early summer is the peak time for cherries.

Sour or tart cherries are the best for making pies. Fresh can be hard to find. Michigan is the top grower.

Look for Skylar Rae cherries. They are similar to Rainier but firmer and with more flavor.

In July you will find Cherry Plums, which are a sweet, tasty mix between a plum and a cherry.

The cherry season wraps up in late August/early September with high altitude cherries from Washington and Canada grown cherries.
