Blueberry Lemonade Do you have a bunch of blueberries on hand and are looking for something to do with them? A great idea is to use them in some homemade lemonade. Adding blueberry flavor to lemonade, gives it an extra note of flavor that is pleasing to the tongue. It’s a very simple process to make this lemonade. It starts with making the lemonade itself and then making a blueberry puree to add to it.

For the basic lemonade
1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 cup sugar
6 1/2 cups good tasting water

Add all these ingredients together in a 2 1/2 quart pitcher. Stir well to combine.

For the blueberry puree
6 oz fresh blueberries
sugar

Add sugar to the blueberries just to coat them as if you were going to eat them as in. Then take the blueberries for a spin in a blender or food processor. Pour the puree through a strainer to remove the skin.

Now add the puree to the lemonade and stir to combine. Taste it and add more water or sugar based on your preference. Chill your lemonade and enjoy!

Calypso Raspberry Earlier today I wrote about one of the most exotic lemonade flavors – Triple Melon. Now I am going to write about one of the most common – raspberry lemonade. Raspberries and lemons go very nicely together. So how did the King Juice Company, makers of Calypso lemonade do at creating this classic combination.

3stars Surprisingly, just ok. It was quite boring compared to some of their other flavors, like the previously mentioned Triple Melon or their black cherry. There was nothing bad about it, it just was rather forgettable. I think Calypso does their best work when it’s something unique. But if your a raspberry lemonade lover, I would still give this one a try. I may not have been the best that I have had, but it may be the best you have had.

Calypso Melon I have tried many different fruit flavors mixed into lemonade. One of the most unique combinations I have tried is the Triple Melon lemonade from Calypso. I thought I had tried all of the Calypso flavors, but then I saw this unique colored liquid staring at me from a refrigerated unit at Plum Market in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It also caught the eye of the cashier as I was checking out. I have had watermelon flavored drinks before, but never a drink that combined multiple types of melons. The three melons are watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew.

5stars I was really surprised in how much I liked this drink. I thought that the watermelon flavor would win out, but the King Juice Company did a wonderful job of balancing each melon flavor, along with the punch of tartness from the lemonade. Very impressive.

Where to Buy
I think this flavor is harder to find than some of the others, as I have only seen it at one store (Plum Market). Click here to read my post about where you can find Calypso products.

Calypso Mandarin Lemonade

Next up on my taste journey through “the islands” it is Calypso’s Mandarin lemonade. The ingredient list doesn’t give us any more information on the mandarin half of this drink, just saying it includes natural flavors besides the lemon juice. Was the combining of these two citrus flavors a good move?

3stars Not really, I didn’t think this was a really good flavor. I think it was one of the more tart flavors, but I really couldn’t distinguish between the mandarin and lemon flavors. I would be no means say it was awful, it just wasn’t up to par with some of the other lemonades produce by the King Juice Company. I still gave it three stars because it wasn’t awful tasting. A drink has to get at least 4 stars for me to purchase it again.

Calypso Tropical Mango “Tropical”, “Ocean”, “Wild” are all words soft drink makers like to add to the front of their flavors to make them sound more exotic. Today I am going to be reviewing the Tropical Mango Lemonade from Calypso. This “tropical” drink contains actual mango puree, not some artificial mango flavoring. It also contains pure cane sugar as the sweetener and pieces of lemon bits to give the drinker a more true lemonade experience (or to give you the feeling that someone back-washed into your drink at the factory).

4stars This is the first time I have had mango and lemonade together and I think it works well. The mango flavor is pleasant and geniue (that’s what using real mango puree will do). There is a little bit of an aftertaste that will bring down the rating of this drink. Is the mango flavoring hiding a inferior lemonade? Maybe, but I still think this drink is worth at, at least for the originality of combining mango and lemon.

Calypso Lemonades 2

Lemon Strawberry Swirl Ice Cream Lemon and strawberry make a great combination. Strawberry lemonade is a great treat to have on a warm summer day. I wanted to capture that same flavor in the form of ice cream, so I came up with this recipe for a lemon ice cream featuring a strawberry swirl. Try to buy the most fresh strawberries that you can get. This is a custard based ice cream, so if you don’t know how to make a custard based ice cream, read my instructions on how to do so.

Ingredients for Lemon Ice Cream
4 egg yolks
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup lemon juice
1 1/2 cup heavy cream
1 cup half & half
pint of fine salt

Ingredients for Strawberry Swirl
1/4 cup + 1 pint of strawberries

Prepare the eggs, sugar, and dairy as according to my instructions on how to make custard based ice creams. Add the lemon juice once the mixture has had about a half hour to cool. Then place into the fridge for at least 2 hours to fully chill.

For the strawberry swirl: cut up your strawberries and pour 1/4 cup of sugar over them. Let it sit for a half hour. Then using a blender, puree the strawberries. Place your pureed strawberries into the fridge to thoroughly chill.

When your ice cream mixture is fully chilled, pour the mixture into your ice cream maker according to the instructions of your model. About 2-3 minutes, before your ice cream is done, slowly introduction your pureed strawberries. Turn off the ice cream maker, and pour your ice cream into your favorite container and place in the freezer to fully harden before enjoying.

Meijer Gold French Berry Lemonade

This is the third flavor in the Meijer Gold line of European sparkling beverages I have reviewed. The bottle says that this drink was “handcrafted by the Geyer family in France’s Lorraine province, this original family recipe blends a natural strawberry flavor with the finest lemons” The ingredient list includes “natural lemon strawberry flavor” which is suppose to include lemon and strawberry juices. This makes up 2% of the liquid in this bottle.

3stars They managed a nice balance between lemon and strawberry flavors. As with the other flavors I thought carbonation was too much at first, so letting it sit for a day and I liked it better. Overall I thought the drink was just alright, nothing bad, but not something I would necessarily reach for again. I wish it contained a higher percentage of juice.

Calypso Ocean Blue Calypso promises to offer it’s drinker a “Taste of the Islands”. And what makes you think more of an island, than the color blue. It’s that beautiful ocean blue, everyone is attracted to. So why not come up with a Ocean Blue Lemonade to bring you to that tropical paradise. Just as all their lemonades this contains real bits of lemon and is made with real cane sugar. So the question now is what is the flavor is Calypso Ocean Blue Lemonade? Well there are blue raspberries appear on the outside of the bottle, so that is a pretty strong hint. Speaking of the bottle, the design and the graphics really catch the customer’s attention. The vivid color makes it stand on easily on a grocery store shelf.

3stars I enjoyed this drink, but it wasn’t great, I would rather have their black cherry flavor. The “blue” flavor was kind of raspberry, kind of blueberry, I wasn’t quite sure which. The “blue” flavor didn’t bring any additional tartness to the table. I enjoy having the little lemon bites to give it a more homemade feel. Like I said I would reach for a different flavor, but I don’t think that should stop you from giving this one a try.

Meijer Gold Blueberry Lemonade

(This is my 2nd review for a Meijer Gold product, check out my review on their Blood Orangeade.)

“Handcrafted by the Geyer family in France’s Lorraine province, this original family recipe blends a natural berry flavor with the finest lemons.” This is how the bottle describes this sparking lemonade. Coming in a curvy 33.8 fl oz bottle containing 2.5% real juice. The ingredients include carbonated water, sugar, natural flavor (including blueberry, elder, blackcurrant and lemon juices), citric acid, and sodium benzoate.

4stars This has an interesting flavor unlike any thing I have ever had before (and in a good way!). The blueberry flavor is excellent and then you are hit with the tartness of the lemon. I think they did a good job combining the two flavors. They flow well together into your mouth. As with the Mejier Gold Blood Orangeade, I thought the amount of carbonation was a little much, but after being opened for over a day, I enjoyed it more. This is definitely better than the Blueberry Lemonade I had from the Jones Soda Company, which could hardly be called lemonade.
