What does a donut nectarine taste like? The sweetest, most flavorful nectarine you have ever tried. They have a smaller pit as well, more actual fruit to enjoy!
I was thinking that I have had peaches and nectarines in every single shape and form. That was until I discovered the existence of a yellow flesh flat nectarine variety called Nectafire. Just looking at this nectarines gets your mouth watering. It's a beautiful deep red color.
That was back in 2012. Since then I keep my eyes open every summer to find more of these amazing fruits. For many years I didn't find any, but good news in the last couple years they have become easier to find. I have even found different varieties as well.
Let me teach you all I know now about the amazing Donut nectarine!

☀️ When are They Season?
I have never seen a donut nectarine in stores until at least July, usually around the middle of the month is the prime time. You can find them into August as well. I have not seen any in September before and I have never found any during the winter when peaches and nectarines are imported from South America.

👅 What Do They Taste Like?
The flavor is just like that of a regular Nectarine. But every single one I have had has been the most flavorful nectarine ever. I have not had one disappointing bite which I for sure can't say that with standard nectarines.
All of the donut nectarines I have had so far have been yellow flesh with a sweet, rich flavor.
Remember me saying that the first one I ever tried was called Nectafire. Here is my original review of that variety.
These particular nectraines were grown by E.W. Brandt and Sons Inc. out of Wapato, Washington. They are located just south of Yakima, Washington, a place known for it's tree fruit. The Brandt family have been involved in agriculture since 1907.
⭐ Review
Here is what I think of this peach variety on a scale of 1-10.
Acidity | 6 |
Peach Flavor | 10 |
Sweetness | 7 |
Juiciness | 9 |
Absolutely amazing! One of the best pieces of fruit I have put in my mouth this season so far. A wonderful flavor with the right amount of sweetness and acidity. And juice was dripping down my face. What more could you ask for.
Nectapie is another variety that I have tried. It's grown by Family Tree Farms out of California. I have never had it and Nectafire side by side but from memory I would say they are equally good.
👀 Look for Donut Nectarines from Family Tree Farms at Sprouts, Kroger brand stores, and the Fresh Market starting in mid-July.
I also found some donut nectarines at a farmer's market in Provo, Utah in 2023. They did not disappoint!
❔ How to Tell When Ripe
Ripeness can be a little different with donut nectarines. These nectarines are good to eat when they show a little bit of wrinkling or the skin feels a bit loose. They are good even when more firm than you would typically eat peaches or nectarines. They don't have to give to gentle pressure to be good. You just don't want them to feel rock hard. It may take a little practice to get the hang of it.
