Learn about a variety of pineapple that has a Piña Colada flavor!

Finally, There are New Pineapple Varieties!

I am someone who loves variety in life. I have visited 48 out of the 50 states, enjoying all sorts of different landscapes. I have reviewed at least a hundred, if not more apple varieties on this blog. But for a long time, I had only the same pineapple in the store. At least as far as I know for because you never saw a variety name listed for a pineapple.
But thankfully, that is now changing. Over the last few years, I have come across some new pineapple varieties. The newest variety I spotted is called Colada Royale. Let me tell you all about it and show you that there is a lot more variety in pineapples than you ever dreamed!

🍍What is a Colada Royale Pineapple?
This is a non-GMO pineapple that was developed using traditional breeding methods and grown by Dole. This is unlike the Pinkglow pineapple from Del Monte that is a genetically modified pineapple that was made to be pink on the inside. Colada Royale pineapples are grown in Honduras.
Colada Royale pineapples have a smaller core than other pineapple varieties, giving you more edible fruit.
👅 What Do They Taste Like?
So these pineapples are said to have a flavor like a Piña Colada, thus they should taste like a pineapple with some coconut notes. That is exactly what I tasted. This could have been the one I had, but I felt like they were less sweet, and a little more tart than a traditional pineapple. If you are someone who doesn't like overly sweet pineapple, I believe this variety is one you need to give a shot.
🛒 Where to Buy Them
I found a nice sized display of them at a Trader Joe's near Portland, Oregon. Where else can you find them? Sprouts stores have them as well. I have heard people saying online that they found them at H-E-B stores in Texas. The Fresh Market lists them on their website.

💲How Much Do They Cost?
At Trader Joe's, I found them at $4.99 a piece. They are more expensive and smaller than a traditional pineapple, so this has to be something you want to try, not a pineapple you buy to save money.
❓How to Tell if They are Ripe
Like any other pineapple, Colada Royale pineapples don't ripen after they are picked. I have worked in produce departments at grocery store and I've read what Dole themselves teach about pineapples. Once they are picked, they are as sweet as they are going to get.
The color of the pineapple is a factor of the growing conditions when the pineapple was harvested and it is not an indicator of quality. A pineapple that is green can be just as good as a pineapple that is more yellow.
So what do you look for then? You want the leaves to be green and not brown. The pineapple shouldn't have too strong of an aroma because if it does, it might have started fermenting and not be good to eat anymore.
