Update 12/5/17. A little blog history to begin here. This was my 1000th post!!!! How appropriate that this milestone post is concerning a company near and dear to my heart – Zingerman’s. I have worked for Zingerman’s Bakehouse for the holiday season in the past. I got to wrap and sticker many of their wonderful pastries – they have a coobook now containing the recipes to those wonderful pastries. I love that this company is dedicated to making and finding the best tasting food out there.
In 2011, this bacon of the month club, which was featured on an episode of the Food Network Show “The Best Thing I Ever Ate”. This show is all about Food Network personalities sharing with the viewers some of the best food that they have eaten, from restaurants to local bakeries and candy shops. In this episode Iron Chef Michael Symon raved about Zingerman’s Bacon of the Month Club, from Zingerman’s Mail Order. He isn’t the only one to rave about it over the years. Bobby Flay and Mario Batali has showed their love for it as well. That’s a lot of big names loving on some bacon.
This club features several types of artisan bacon. If you have never had more than cheap store brand bacon you are going to be wowed. Mass producers of bacon take shortcuts (like adding smoke flavor instead of actually smoking the bacon) in order to increase their profits. You won’t find that this club. Each of these bacon makers create their bacon to be full flavor without taking shortcuts that would harm the flavor.
Zingerman’s Mail Order offers 3, 6, 12 month and quarterly bacon subscriptions. Besides the bacon you also receive a free magnet, bacon stories, histories, and recipes. A lot better than most of those food of the month clubs, and I am not just saying that because I was a part of the company!

I have tried two of these bacons. Nueske’s Applewood Smoked Bacon is absolutely amazing. I love bacon that is smoked with applewood over hickory – hey I am produce guy, of course I would prefer the fruit woods right? And this is the best applewood smoked bacon. Nueske’s has a cherrrywood bacon as well that is even better.
I recently got to try Bende Smoked Bacon. I had it with some egg noodles. Super smokey. The flavor is just spread througout the whole dish.
I hope to try all the bacons at some point.
The co-founder of Zingerman’s – Ari Weinzweig has written an entire book on the subject of bacon. It has everything you wanted to know about bacon and even things you never thought about. I never thought you could write a whole book about bacon, but Ari showed otherwise.
