5 Can't Miss Brands of Cottage Cheese from Across the Nation

Published: Jun 17, 2024 by Eric Samuelson

Find out the must try out brands of cottage cheese that I have discovered in my travels throughout the country.

As a full time RVer since 2020, I have spend a lot of time in different grocery stores throughout the country. That means I have had my fair share of different brands of cotton cheese. So I wanted to share with you what brands are ones that I can't miss when I find them in the stores.

Make sure to share your favorites as well in the comments at the end of the post.

    5 Favorite Cottage Cheese Brands

Here are the top 5 cottage cheese brands that I have discovered in all my travels.

    • Wegman's 10% Cottage Cheese
    • AE Cottage Cheese
    • Toft's
    • Good Culture
    • Shamrock Farms
Wegmans 10% Milkfat Cottage Cheese at the store.

    Wegman's 10% Cottage Cheese

🗺️ Where to Find - New England and mid-Atlantic states

Normally when you find cottage cheese in the store, the highest fat content you see is 4%. That's why it stunned me to discover one that was more than double that, at 10%. The container was certainly telling the truth about being rich and creamy. This one was absolutely amazing and the very best store brand cottage cheese I have come across ever. We stuffed our RV fridge with as many containers as we could fit.

Wegman's stores are on the east coast in states like New York and Pennsylvania.

    AE Cottage Cheese

🗺️ Where to Find - Midwest, Plains States

AE stands for Anderson Erickson. They are a dairy company based out of Iowa. I have mostly gotten their products from Hy-Vee stores in states including Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska. We love both their yogurt and the cottage cheese.

Their cottage cheese has a good flavor and the right amount of tang. They have additional flavors including Salt & Pepper (my wife's favorite), Ranch Peppercorn and Mr. E’s Garden Vegetable Cottage Cheese. They recently came out with a Whipped, Smooth cottage cheese that is ready to be used right away in recipes.

    Toft's

🗺️ Where to Find - Ohio

The last few years I was living in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area I would on occasion head down south, crossing the border into enemy territory (also known as Ohio), so I could visit the Toledo Farmer's Market.

After it was over I stopped at a store called Monnette's Market. They sold containers of Toft's cottage cheese. My oldest daughter and I would buy a container and share the entire thing in the car before we headed home - good thing we keep plastic spoons in the car.

Toft's dairy is the oldest dairy in all of Ohio. They also make really good ice cream as well. The cottage cheese is our favorite. It has great flavor, not too sour. The texture is nice. I don't like my cottage cheese to be too liquidly but I also don't want paste. This was is just enough not to be dry.

Good Culture Whole Milk Cottage Cheese at the grocery store.

    Good Culture

🗺️ Where to Find - Nationwide

Here is a brand that you can find coast to coast. It's the only not regional one on my list. I couldn't help but include it. Why? Just look at that ingredient list:

The ingredient list shown on a container of Good Culture Cottage Cheese: Skim Milk, Whole Milk, Cream, Sea Salt, Live and active cultures
    • Skim Milk
    • Whole Milk
    • Cream
    • Sea Salt
    • Live and active cultures

It's not common to find a cottage cheese with real cultures in it. And it's even more rare to find one that isn't too tangy if it does.

It's simple and the way cottage cheese should be. The curds are on the smaller size, probably the smallest on this list. It's not too. The flavor is top notch. It's the most expensive one on this list but you for sure get what you pay for.

I got to meet some of the people that work for them at an expo in Anaheim. They were sampling it with some Everything Seasoning on top. I had not thought to try that before but I am glad that they did!

    Shamrock Farms

🗺️ Where to Find - Southwestern States

Last up on the list is Shamrock Farms. We stayed very close to this farm in Arizona a few years ago. So I got to regularly see the cows that would provide the milk for their products. I find for myself when I can have a better connection to a product like that it just makes me want to buy it more. Especially if it's good like their cottage cheese.

While I have found some of their milk, cream, and half and half in other parts of the country I have yet to see their cottage cheese outside of the southwest. You know I will for sure be looking for it next time I am in the southwest.
