How to Elevate Cottage Cheese: 5 Creative Seasoning Ideas!

Published: Jun 12, 2024 by Eric Samuelson

Are you bored of plain cottage cheese? Get some suggestions for different seasonings that you can add that will elevate your next bowl of cottage cheese.

4 different pictures of cottage cheese with blue spoon in it showing different seasonings on top.

Cottage cheese don't have to be boring or plain. A good container of cottage cheese will have the perfect match of salty, tangy, and creamy flavor.

A great container of cottage cheese will contain some additional seasonings that you apply yourself. In this post I am going to show you my favorite ways to season cottage cheese that will make you eat it, spoonful after spoonful.

Due to the fact that I absolutely hate fruit with cottage chees you will not hear any advice from me on that. More power to you if you like that combo.

    Seasonings to Use

Here is my list of the top seasonings for cottage cheese.

    • Real Salt
    • Smoked or garlic salt
    • Everything seasoning
    • Freshly cracked black pepper
    • Dried herbs

Now I will go more in depth on each one with some reasons why I use them.

    Real Salt

Doesn't cottage cheese already contain salt? Yes it surely does. However sometimes I get a container of cottage cheese and it is just too sour tasting. You know what helps? A little bit of salt.

Each and every time I am going to use Redmond Real Salt from the salt mines of Utah. Their salt has the best flavor. I love that when you look at it, it doesn't just look like a perfectly uniform white salt. It resembles grains of sand.

🎧 Listen to my podcast episode on Why Real Salt Is Worth It.

    Peppercorns

My wife taught me this one. Freshly cracked black pepper is fantastic on cottage cheese. It gives it a little spicy kick.

No pre-ground stuff. It doesn't have anywhere the flavor as once those peppercorns are cracker, the violate oils within begin to dissipate. The pre-ground stuff may have been sitting on your grocery store self for who knows how long, plus add to that the time it may have spend sitting in a warehouse somewhere.

If you choose a high quality peppercorn this is a fantastic way to taste all of that flavor. Learn about the all the different types of peppercorns out there as well as my favorite ones from Burlap & Barrel Single Origin Spices.

    Everything Seasoning

Trader Joe's made Everything But the Bagel Seasoning popular. Now you can pretty much find that seasoning blend in every grocery store. I had not thought to try it before until I was at a food expo in Anaheim and the company Good Culture was there giving out samples of their cottage cheese with in it on.

A typical Everything Seasoning contains different types of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, minced garlic, minced onion, and salt. You can totally make it yourself, I have a recipe for Everything Seasoning on my blog post talking about the different types of sesame seeds.

    Dried Herbs

Pulling some dried herbs out of your spice cabinet is an easy way to add flavor to your cottage cheese. Here are some suggestions:

    • Basil
    • Parsley
    • Thyme
    • Dill
    • Oregano

You can add rosemary but that tends to be larger in size and tougher than the other herbs. It might throw off the texture too much.

    Smoked or Garlic Salt

Last on the list is used a flavored salt, like a garlic salt or a smoked salt. This all depends on how salty your cottage cheese is to begin with. Only use sparingly to add some additional flavor.

For a garlic salt, I like to use a garlic salt made with black garlic. This is garlic that has been fermented for 1-2 months normally. The garlic turns black and has a flavor more like that of roasted garlic. It's more mellow and sweet flavor would work better on cottage cheese.

If you want to learn more about black garlic, check out this chicken recipe I made using it.

For smoked salt, look for a smoked salt that is actually smoked, not just with liquid smoke added to it. I mentioned them at the start and I want to bring up Real Salt again. They have a couple different smoked salts that are naturally smoked.
