In episode 008 I am sharing my recipe for Peach Ginger Sour Cream Muffins while offering our tips on buying spices in the grocery store and why sometimes sourcing more expensive spices might save you money in the long run.
🛒 Before You Checkout
What you need to know before you checkout at the grocery store or market:
Besides the peaches, the best part of this recipe is the spices. Often times the small container of spices you buy at the store are not a very good value. They are taking advantage of you not wanting a lot. Trouble is if you buy a large container, you may end up not using it all before the flavor is lost.
Ground spices tend to lose flavor after 6 months. Whole spices can last 3-4 years. Buy whole spices and grind yourself for the best flavor and value.
I believe buying quality spices is worth it as well. Literally wars were fought over spice trading routes. That's crazy to think about.
I get whatever spices I can from Burlap & Barrel Single Origin Spices. I have found that not only are their spices the best tasting but also the freshest. I can count on them lasting longer. I don't ever toss any of their spices because they lost their flavor. And that saves me money.
