Convenience foods are not something that we commonly have in my family. But there are occasions if we are really busy or if we are moving our RV that I will pick a convenience food instead of eating out at a fast food restaurant

For me, the easiest things to have on hand is foods I can just throw in the air fryer. It does such a faster job than the oven and a better job than the microwave.

Case in a point, the "Red Bag Chicken" from ALDI. See how we cook in the air fryer and also turn the meal into a cheaper option than going for a fast food at a certain chicken sandwich place!

💲 How Much Does it Cost?

The bag costs $7.99 as of January 2023. I find that you get 6 chicken filets. The bag weight is 24 ounces. So we are talking about $1.33 per filet. If you want to look at it by pound then we are talking about $5.33/lb. Would it be cheaper to buy chicken breasts and bread it yourself. Yes. This is all about the convenience factor.

    ⭐ Review

Is it the greatest frozen chicken I ever had. No. Have I had worse? Yes. It's acceptable, it's not bad. I think the size and thickness of the filets is good for making a sandwich with. And the filet gets crispy enough in the air fryer.

To boost the flavor add some freshly cracked black pepper onto your chicken when serving.

⏲️ How Long to Air Fry

Set your air fryer to 400 degrees for 20 minutes for a full basket full. I like to check on them after 10 minutes and flip them over. If you are only doing one at a time I would set it for 15 minutes and check on it.

🗒️ Note - I cooked mine in a Ninja Foodi with 2-Basket Air Fryer.

🧊 Do You Need to Thaw?

There is absolutely no reason to thaw the chicken before putting it in the air fryer. The chicken is fully cooked and just needs to be re-heated and browned slightly to get crispy.

    📋 Instructions

Take the chicken straight from your freezer and place into the basket of your air fryer.

It's important that you don't stack the chicken on top of each other. If the chicken is touching it won't get crispy. It will end up being soggy. If you can't fit all you want you need to work in batches.

Set your air fryer to 400 degrees for 10 minutes. Flip the chicken and then air fryer for another 10 minutes.

The bag says that if you are doing this in the oven you need to cook it for 20 minutes and then flip and do another 20 minutes. The Air Fryer is twice as fast.

💡 Tip - If you are working in batches you can put all the chicken back in for 1 mintue to re-warm if need be. At that point it's crispy and you don't have to be as concerned with overcrowding.

It is unnecessary to add spray any oil onto the chicken. You shouldn't have any problem with it sticking to the basket.

    🌬️ Air Fryer

I have used several different models of air fryers. Whether they weres ones I have owned or used at a family member or friend's house. What I can tell you is that bigger certainly isn't better. I have found that ones with larger capacity don't cook the food evenly enough.

What I have found that works the best is a dual basket air fryer from Ninji. With the two basket option you still get capacity but in a smaller space. I can cook a whole bag of chicken at once and it's evenly cooked. I also have the option of cooking two different things at different temperatures at the exact same time. It's beee a huge time saver in the month I have had it so far.

🙋‍♀️ What type of air fryer do you own? Leave a commet below.

    🥪 Chick Fil A Copycat

Everyone loves Chick Fil A! You can make your own copycat sandwich using ALDI ingredients. Here is what you will need:

    • L'Oven Hamburger Buns - 99 cents
    • Great Gherkins Hamburger Dill Chips - $2.19
Jars of Great Gherkins Hamburger Dill Chips on display at ALDI

For a higher quality bun, choose any of their brioche buns. They will be more expensive but will taste a lot better. The hamburger buns are nothing special.

To complete this copycat sandwich you need a sauce. To make a Chick Fil-A style sauce combine these. I am listing the recipe by "parts" so you can easily scale it to how much you want.

    • 4 parts mayonnaise
    • 2 parts honey
    • 2 parts BBQ sauce
    • 1 part yellow mustard
    • Squeeze of fresh lemon juice

    Ingredients

    • 1 bag ALDI Red Bag Chicken Filets

    Instructions

    • Add chicken filets to the basket of you air fryer. Make sure they are in a single layer and aren't touching or just barely touching.
    • Set your air fryer to 400 degrees for 10 minutes.
    • After 10 mintues, flip each filet and cook for another 10 minutes. If your air fryer usually cooks both sides evenly than just skip the flip and do 20 minutes total.
    • If only cooking one filet, cook it for 15 minutes and check to see if it's done.
    • Chicken filets are done when they are crispy outside and warm all the way through.
    • If you can't fit all the chicken at once, cook them in batches. You can re-heat the first batch for 1 minute before serving.
