No matter what, I love getting packages in the mail.
There is always excitement when the UPS, FedEx, USPS, or Amazon Prime driver shows up outside our house. Even when I know exactly what is coming.
So how much more exciting is it to get a surprise!
That's what you get when you sign up for Universal Yums - a box full of sweet and savory treats from a different area of the world. It's super fun. The kids love it.
But would a subscription be worth it to you?
Let's look at different segments of people who might be interested in an Universal Yums subscription and if it would be worth it to them.
✍️ Food Blogger
As a food blogger, I am always looking to try new things as well as being inspired. Some of the snacks in the box are stuff that I probably would not have picked out from a supermarket shelf. It forces me to try and potentially be inspired by the flavors.
One of the snacks I tried were Kent Crisps Ashmore Cheese & Onion. I had never heard of Ashmore cheese before, now I want to find it! Or I had a snack that had an Ube flavor, which was my first experience with Ube - this particular snack I wasn't a fan of, but now I am interested in giving other Ube flavored snacks a shot.
? Homeschooling
The boxes are a great jumping off point for a homeschooling family like ours. The guide that comes with each box, shares with you some information about the origin of your snacks.
Last time we got a box, my wife got out her map book, some crayons, and paper. We took some time to learn about the Philippines, do some drawing, and then tried each snack. I read to them the info from the box about each snack. Learning was had by all, including the adults.
? Gluten Free or Diet Restrictions?
I am sorry to say that for those that need a gluten free diet, Universal Yums won't work for you. Items in the box do contain gluten and some that don't make have been produced on shared equipment. Same thing goes with nuts.
At this time they aren't offering the ability to customize your box, other than the size.
? Tight Budget
If you are on a tight budget, than this may or may not be for. If you are buying the boxes as a way to save money on food, that isn't going to be the case. If you are buying the boxes as a form of entertainment, that it absolutely could be worth the money. Even the largest box that costs $39 brought our family a few hours of fun that we spread out over several tastings.
? Getting Kids to Try More Flavors
As a parent, one of the biggest challenges is getting kids to give different foods a try. New flavors are often avoid at all costs.
My kids were willing to try everything in the box. I know if I brought home a bag of Chili & Lemon Potato Snacks, I don't think anyone would be wiling to try them. The box and the score card that comes with, put them in a more adventurous mode. Certainly doesn't mean they like everything like this photo says:
? How Much Does It Cost?
Here is the breakdown of the current cost as of June 2020. Prices could change in the future.
Box | Snacks | Monthly | Yearly |
Yum | 6+ | $15 | $165 ($13.75/month) |
Yum Yum | 12+ | $25 | $275 ($22.92/month) |
Super Yum | 20+ | $39 | $429 ($35.75/month) |
If you can swing yearly, that is a better value. However you may not want to make that commitment right off the bat, so you can start with a monthly subscription and then do yearly if you decide you really like it.
My Final Thoughts
Our family has a lot of fun with Universal Yums. Typically with every snack there is at least one of us that likes it - and if it's just one, they get to finish the bag! We find it worth the fun experience we get to have once a month. And since we get the Super Yum box, we are able to make multiple tastings out of it.
