Spices I'm Trying in February 2024

Published: Feb 4, 2024 by Eric Samuelson

Here is a list of spices that I received from Burlap and Barrel Single Origin Spices.

6 Jars of Burlap & Barrel spices in a box

Burlap and Barrel is a single origin spice company that works directly with the farmers they source their spices from. This allows them to pay the farmers more than they would get on the commodity market and grants us access to spices that you would never find in the grocery store. Using their spices has been changing my cooking since 2019 and will change yours as well. I firmly believe that. In 2023, they were featured on an episode of Shark Tank.

There is nothing more exciting than coming home and finding a package from Burlap and Barrel sitting on the doorstep. It's been a while since I have gotten the chance to try some new spices so I was excited for what was awaiting me in the box.

Here is what I got this time around.

    • Za'atar
    • Alphonso Mango Amchur
    • Purple Shallot Powder
    • Szegedi 178 Hot Paprika
    • Wild Hing
    • Drumstick Lemongrass

Now let me go into more detail on each spice.

    • Za'atar
    • Alphonso Mango Amchur
    • Purple Shallot Powder
    • Szegedi 178 Hot Paprika
    • Wild Hing
    • Drumstick Lemongrass

Burlap & Barrel Za'atar blend on a piece of burlap

    Za'atar

Za'atar is the name for both a type of herb related to oregano and a spice blend commonly used in Middle Eastern cooking. This blend contains Za'atar, toasted sesame seeds, sumac, and salt.

The taste is described as savory, deeply herbal, piney, nutty, tart and peppery.

Why I am trying this spice - I have heard lots of good things about Za'atar but have yet to try it. This blend sounds right up my alley. I am most looking forward to mixing it with some extra virgin olive oil and dipping bread into it.

Burlap & Barrel Alphonso Mango Amchur on a piece of burlap

    Alphonso Mango Amchur

Imagine taking green unripe mangoes, grating them along with some salt and allowing them to dry in the sun. Then turning them into a powder that has a lemon like zinginess but with a tropical vibe.

Alphonso Mango Amchur can take the most ordinary of vegetable and elevate it extortionary.

Why I am trying this spice - I am in a Facebook group for Burlap & Barrel fans. People are always raving about this and get excited when it comes back into stock.

Burlap & Barrel Purple Shallot powder on a piece of burlap

    Purple Shallot Powder

Are you finding yourself in a cooking rut? Spice up your routine with Burlap & Barrel spices. A simple swap is using their Purple Shallot Powder in place of where you would use onion powder. A single teaspoon will replace the flavor provided from a single fresh shallot.

Why I am trying this spice - I am a fan of shallots. We use garlic powder all the time, so I wanted to use this instead of garlic or onion too in recipes.

Burlap & Barrel Szegedi 178 Hot Paprika on a piece of burlap

    Szegedi 178 Hot Paprika

If you thought paprika didn't have that much flavor, you have never had a good paprika. Szegedi 178 is the name of an heirloom variety of pepper that is brings both some heat and some sweetness.

Why I am trying this spice - This is the only paprika from Burlap & Barrel I have yet to try out. The other ones have been extraordinary so I have high hopes for this paprika as well.

Burlap & Barrel Wild Hing on a piece of burlap

    Wild Hing

Are you someone or know someone that can't have garlic or onions? Wild Hing has some of that kind of flavor. It's made from dried sap of a mountain shrub. A little goes a long way!

Why I am trying this spice - I have a friend that can't have garlic or onion. I wanted to see for her what this spice is like and if I want to recommend to her in the future.

Burlap & Barrel Drumstick Lemongrass on a piece of burlap

    Drumstick Lemongrass

If you wanted to try using Lemongrass in your cooking this is perfect as you don't need to pick sticks of it, it's a powder that is ready to use. 1 stalk of fresh lemongrass can be swap with 1 teaspoon of this Drumstick Lemongrass powder.

Why I am trying this spice - It's not often you find a ground lemongrass. This is easier to have on hand than fresh, so it will give me more opportunities to try it in my cooking.

Burlap & Barrel Robusta Black Peppercorns on a piece of burlap

    Order Your Own Spices

Are you interested in giving any f these spices a try? I will post the links below here again so you can pick out which one you want to try.

But before I do that, I have a special deal for you! When you are checking out and you use the promo code EATLIKENOONE at checkout you will get a FREE 1.8oz grinder-top of Robusta Black Peppercorns with orders over $15. You will need to add the peppercorns to your car tad when you use the code EATLIKENOONE they will be free for you!

Robusta Black Peppercorns have a classic pepper kick but with bold flavor coming from being allowed to fully ripen on the vine. The name comes from the peppercorns being grown along side Robusta coffee in Vietnam.

Here is that list of all the spices I mentioned in this post:

    • Za'atar
    • Alphonso Mango Amchur
    • Purple Shallot Powder
    • Szegedi 178 Hot Paprika
    • Wild Hing
    • Drumstick Lemongrass
