One of the biggest keys to cooking good food is having good salt and good spices in your home.
Salt
When it comes to salt I am a big fan of Redmond Real Salt. The salt is harvested from mines in Utah. It has a great taste from all the trace minerals in the salt. It looks more like grain of sand with different shades of color. It's not squeaky white.
Spices
I think we often take spices for granted. They are so easy to find in our grocery stores. But if you look at history, literal wars were fought over spice routes! We have come to settle for what the store offers which is often old and/or poorly produced.
I get all of my spices now from Burlap & Barrel Single Origin Spices. They work directly with the farmers to bring you spices you can't find anywhere in the US, with a freshness that is unmatched.
Here are just a few of my favorites from them:
- Royal Cinnamon
- Smoked Pimenton Paprika
- Wild Mountain Cumin
- Zanzibar Black Peppercorns
- Purple Stripe Garlic Powder
