    ⚙️ Why This Recipes Work

The crinkle cut squash pieces are cut just like crinkle cut fries just like the fries you get if you have a Culver's restaurant near you. They are the perfect size for cooking in the air fryer and those edges will get crispy.

These were the best non-potato fries I have ever had in my life. Truly I was surprised at how much I liked them.

    🛒 Ingredients

You don't need much for these:

    • Trader Joe's Butternut Squash Zig Zags (12 ounce container)
    • Kosher salt to taste
    • Spray oil

Serving size - 2 people or 1 really large portion

You can find the zig zags in a plastic container in the store by the salads and bagged vegetables.

To make these all is spray the squash with oil and season with kosher salt. I was glad to hear that Trader Joe's was carrying my favorite and Alton Brown's favorite brand of kosher salt, Diamond Crystal.

You could get them plain this way, but why not have something to dip them into like you would fries.

A bottle of Trader Joe's Carolina Gold Barbeque Sauce sitting on a table.

I served mine with 3 different sauces:

    • Ketchup
    • Fry Sauce (a 50/50 mix of ketchup and mayo, along with some garlic powder)
    • Trader Joe's Carolina Gold BBQ Sauce

The fry sauce is something I just make myself. You just need equals parts ketchup and mayo. Then add in some garlic powder. Then I just taste it and adjust if it's not right. Sometimes I add a little salt depending on how salty the ketchup was.

The Carolina Gold BBQ Sauce is really quite good and for a great price. I have had been to the Carolinas and had BBQ there and this sauce compares nicely to what I had down there. It's probably my favorite condiment to buy at Trader Joe's.

An air fryer basket with raw butternut squash zig zags

    📋 Instructions

I have a Ninji Foodi Dual Zone Basket Air Fryer. For my instructions will reflex that.

With my dual basket air fryer, I can cook all the squash at once. I don't like to crowd the squash so that it cooks better. So I put half in one basket and half in the other basket. If you only have 1 basket or a small air fryer, then you can work in batches.

Place the squash into the air fryer. Spray with oil and add salt to taste.

Ninja Foodi air fryer set to 350 degrees.

I start the air fryer at 350 degrees. Why? Because I want the squash to cook through and not burn on the outside. Air fry for 5 minutes.

Ninja Foodi air fryer set to 400 degrees.

Now it's time to turn up the heat. Set your air fryer to 400 degrees. Cook for 3-7 more minutes until the zig zags are as crispy so you want them. Stay in the area while cooking so you don't burn them. I shake the baskets up and check on them every couple minutes until I am happy with them.

Now all that it's left is to put them on on a plate and serve them with sauces. I learned that shot glasses make for excellent containers to serve your sauces in.
