Who says you can't have fun with your food? In this quick, easy recipe I have fun with mushrooms by turning them into skulls. Super easy and can be used in your favorite fall recipes. Stay to the end to see my suggestions.

    Ingredients

    Pretty simple here.

    • 8 oz white button mushrooms
    • salt to taste
    • cooking oil for drizzling

💡 Tip - If you can shop for your mushrooms by the pound and pick them yourself that is the best option. I did this at Safeway when I made this recipe. I was able to pick out larger mushrooms than were in the packs. The larger white mushrooms are easier to carve without breaking. You also could use cremini mushrooms if you want.

Raw white mushrooms cut into the shape of a skull on a cutting board.

    Instructions

Start by removing any excess dirt. You can give the mushrooms a quick rinse under water if you want and then dry them off before cutting.

You want a sharp pairing knife to cut into the mushrooms. Something with a good point. You will start by cutting the mushrooms in half. Then carve out two eyes for the skull. Then cut a triangle for the nose. Imagine you're carving a pumpkin. You will then cut a few slits into the stem. Just keep doing this until you have gotten through all the mushrooms.

Then it's time to air fry the mushrooms. Drizzle whatever cooking oil you want onto the mushrooms and salt to taste.

Air fry for 4 minutes at 375 degrees. No need to preheat the air fryer.

Give the mushrooms some space, don't overcrowd your air fryer basket. If the mushrooms are touching or stacked then you need to work in batches.

The mushrooms are done when they are golden brown. They will shrink some as well. Now they are ready to be either just eaten right now or used in a recipe. If you don't finish them or need to store them for use later, I would give yourself 3 days to get them all up when stored in the fridge.

Black bean spaghetti with air fried skull shaped mushrooms with tomato sauce soaked mozzarella pearls.

    Serving Suggestion

What I liked to do with them is serve them with Explore Cuisine Organic Black Bean Spaghetti. They have an amazing color, cook in just 4-6 minutes, and have a flavor that is mild. The texture is pleasantly chewy. I was afraid at first that these would taste "too beany" but that certainly was not the case at all. According to the box the spaghetti contains 45g of protein per 3.5oz serving.

Besides the spaghetti and mushrooms I like to add tomato sauce (use whatever you want, homemade or jarred) and mozzarella pearls. Dipping the pearls into the tomato sauce makes the pearls look like bloody eyes, adding to the "scariness" of this dish.
