The 11 Muenster Cheese Substitutes for Recipes & Snacking

    Published: Jul 3, 2022 · Modified: Jul 11, 2023 by Eric Samuelson

Got a recipe that calls for Muenster cheese? Or just looking to swap it out for something else? Let us show you what makes a good substitute.

A metal grocery cart with Muenster cheese along with Gouda, Monterey Jack, and Havarti.

One of my kid's favorite cheeses is Muenster. They love it's mild flavor and how well it melts for a grilled cheese sandwich.

Maybe you can find it in your area or you are looking for other cheeses that would work. Let us give you some ideas of what else can be used.

    ♻️ Substitutions

In choosing a Muenster substitute you want a cheese that is relatively mild, can melt well, and has a smooth, buttery quality. Here is a list of cheeses that fit some or all of those qualities.

    • Young Gouda
    • Monterey Jack
    • Havarti
    • Port Salut
    • Oaxaca
    • Mozzarella
    • Mild Brick
    • Edam
    • Baby Swiss
    • Provolone
    • Butterkäse

Mozzarella is the easiest replacement on this list. It's one of the top selling cheeses in the United States. Monterrey Jack can work depending on how sharp it is. I have had some Jack cheese that had way more bite to it than you get from any Muenster.

Edam tends to be more firm than Muenster. Havarti has a more open airy texture. But both could be used as a substitute still. They melt well. Butterkäse has that buttery quality.

Someone holding a package of Port Salut at the grocery store in front of a display of cheese.

Port Salut has the appearance of Muenster with it's orange rind. It's more expensive than some of the other choices on this list.

Swiss cheese is definitely not as mild as Muenster, but if you were going to use is as a replacement look for the milder Baby Swiss (Guggisberg makes the best). Likewise with Gouda you want a milder version which means a young Gouda that is only aged for a few months at most.

🧀 What Cheese is Most Similar

I think of all of the cheeses on the list above, mild brick cheese is the most similar. In fact, at the World Cheese Championship in Wisconsin, they have a category that is Brick and Muenster.

A grilled cheese sandwich that is cut in half sitting on an electric griddle.

    🥪 Grilled Cheese

In my opinion, Muenster is the top cheese for grilled cheese. It melts so well and the sandwich has the ooey gooey quality you desire. Any cheese that melts well can be used for a grilled cheese.

I think on our list from above Monterrey Jack or Provolone would be the best replacements in this case. American and Cheddar are often used for grilled cheese, but you are better off with the other ones I recommended.

    🍕 Pizza

Did you know that Little Cesar's uses a combination of Mozzarella and Muenster on their pizza? If your pizza recipe calls for some Muenster, you can just go with all Mozzarella in the exact same amount.

Brick cheese is my personal favorite pizza cheese. It melts so nicely and has enough flavor. Oh is it good.

    🚸 For the Kids

Most of my kids love milder cheese, except the older one that like sharp cheese and blue cheese! For the younger kids I get a lot of Muenster for them, but if I don't other mild cheese they like include Colby, Co-Jack, and Mozzarella. They will eat Provolone sometimes, especially my son on a meatball sandwich.

I don't get them a lot of string cheese as it's a much better value to get bar cheese and cut it myself into cubes for snacks and lunches.
