    What is a Dazzle Apple?

Published: Jul 31, 2020 by Eric Samuelson

Does Dazzle really dazzle your taste buds? Or does the flavor fizzle out? Learn about this New Zealand apple that has arrived in the United States.

As always I am up for trying a new apple variety. I don't get to do that much in July but thanks to a large display of New Zealand grown varieties at Dorothy Lane Market in Dayton, Ohio I was able to do just that.

One of those varieties promised to dazzle me. It says so in the name.

    ? What's a Dazzle Apple?

Developed in New Zealand, Dazzle apples are a large red apple being grown by several orchards. The official name is PremA129 and the marketing name is Dazzle. For example. Cripps Pink is the official name of a Pink Lady apple, which is just a marketing name.

Both Gala and Braeburn apples originated in New Zealand, so they have a pretty good track record with developing varieties. The Granny Smith apple was found in Australia to give even more credit to that part of the globe.

    ? Review

Does Dazzle live up to it's name. Here is my ratings from my taste test on a scale of 1-10.

    Crispiness9
    Juiciness7
    Tartness4
    Sweetness8
    Flavor5

To be frank I don't see what the big deal about this apple is. Yes it is more juicy than a Gala or a Fuji apple, two of the most sold apples in the US. The flavor itself is pretty ok. Nothing memorable and not unlike anything else that has come out in the last 10 years. Sure it's crispy and sweet but a lot of apples that have come out recently are crispy and sweet.

I don't mind the apple and if in July, and there it and a bunch of old US grown apples, that I would choose it. But in a market that is probably becoming over saturated with new varieties for the average consumer, I don't see how this one is going to make much of an impression.

    ? Where to Buy

Well there is only one place I have seen them so far. I will add more if I am able to locate them or hear about where they are at.
