What is a NZ Prince Apple?

    Published: Aug 1, 2020 · Modified: Aug 17, 2020 by Eric Samuelson

Is this pretty red apple from New Zealand all looks or does the taste match up?

This is final apple of a trifecta of New Zealand grown apples I discovered at Dorothy Lane Market in Dayton, Ohio while on a long weekend trip.

In the summer months, I seek out the New Zealand apples as they were more recently picked the Washington apples that have been in cold storage for ¾ of a year.

NZ Prince, formerly called Kingsbeer Red, is a very red apple that was discovered as a chance seedling in an orchard in New Zealand. Not to be confused with the Red Prince apple which is a different variety altogether.

There are other apples out or coming that also will start with "NZ" such as NZ Rose, NZ Beauty, and NZ Queen.

While the focus for promoting this apple is mainly on Asian countries, I was able to track this one down in the United States.

    ? My Review

Here is what I think of this apple on a scale of 1-10.

    Crispiness5
    Sweetness9
    Tartness3
    Juiciness6
    Flavor5

I was not really impressed with this apple. It wasn't super crisp and mildly juicy.

The flavor of the apple was decent at first, but after several bites I became bored with it.

Overall, not a great apple that I would really want to buy again.

    ☀️ When in Season?

NZ Prince apples are picked in mid to late February. By the time I had them it was July, so it still had been many months off the tree. Most New Zealand grown apples don't start showing up in the US until May at the earliest.

Maybe if I had them a bit sooner, I would have a different opinion of them.

    ? Baking/Cooking with this Apple

My thought are this apple is too sweet for baking. I prefer a tart apple to balance out the sweetness of any baked good.

A sweet apple can be good for applesauce, since you don't need to add any additional sugar.

    Nice to Meet You,
