Did you know that you can actually air fry potstickers? Learn how to take the frozen Trader Joe's Gyoza and turn them into delicious, browned and tender potstickers that aren't dried out or tough.
My family and I love potstickers. They are one of the few convivence foods we will go to when we are in a pinch and need to get food on the table fast and without a mess.
During the summer time I don't like standing over a hot burner cooking them on my stove. So that is when I turn to my air fryer. I have made mistakes with the air fryer with them so it took a little trail and error but now I think I got it down. Let me show you how!
Why Air Fry
The air fry allows you to cook the potstickers until they are juicy and tender without having to heat up your whole kitchen. Also because you aren't using any water, you can get a crispy outside and you don't risk them opening up on you.
It's a great way to cook them. It's more of a hand off process so that you can prepare other parts of your meal while they are cooking.
Tips for Air Frying
The temperature you want to air fry the gyoza at is 400 degrees for about 13 minutes or until the potstickers are golden brown or it's 160 degrees when checked with an instant read thermometer.
It's important that you coat the potstickers in oil. People have this false idea that everything that goes into an air fry doesn't ever need any oil. That's simply not true. It comes from marketing the air fryer as a oil free option to fry. Really an air fryer is a convection oven done in a smaller space, not a deep fryer replacement.
If you don't coat them in oil, your potstickers will be dry and tough in the air fryer. What I do is place them in a mixing bowl and then drizzle with oil. Toss to coat evenly. I don't like using spray oil as it actually costs more per ounce of oil and may contain propellant that may not be the best for you or your air fryer's longevity. Sticker to just coating them in a bowl.
When they are browned like in the photo above, you know they are done and ready to eat. You can shake the air fryer basket half way through to move them around to help promote even browning.
When they are done I like to drizzle some soy sauce on top. Other good options include Bachan's Japanese BBQ sauce (not at Trader Joe's, look for at Walmart or Costco), Hoisin sauce, Sweet & Sour sauce, Ginger-Soy sauce, or Sweet Chili sauce.
