Find out when you can pick the wildest berries of the season. Don't miss out on the season.
I came to Maine in August.
Sure I wanted to explore the coast, see Acadia National Park, and go to a state with hopefully cooler weather than the rest of the country.
But one reason that was high on my list - wild blueberries. This is the time of year in which fields of tiny but mighty wild blueberries are ripe for the picking.
How long does the season last and where can you get them fresh form the field? That's what we are about to dive into.
🌞 When in Season?
Maine by far is the number one wild blueberry state. And they take great pride it. The blueberry is celebrated at farmer's market, road side stands, grocery stores, and restaurants.
In Maine, wild blueberry season begins in July and lasts into as late as early September.
Maine is the only state I have been to that sold fresh wild blueberries in the stores. They are available in the stores from late July to late August. Hannaford Market had a good supply of them for a couple weeks. I found them later at the farmer's market, stretching into September. You may even be able to find them grown certified organic.
In other states you will need to seek out your own wild blueberries or settle for them frozen. Or you can sometimes find them dried. Trader Joe's sells really good dried wild blueberries that I just love.
🇺🇸 Season by State
Here are some states where you can pick your own wild blueberries and what time of year to expect them to be ripe. The elevation you are at will effects when the berries are ready, with higher elevations being later.
Maine | late July to early September |
Michigan | July to August |
New Hampshire | mid July to August |
Vermont | mid July to August |
New York | July to August |
Washington | late July to August |
Oregon (western) | August to September |
Minnesota | mid July to August |
Wisconsin | mid July to August |
