💲 Prices of Tuna at Costco

How much does tuna cost at Costco? Let me share with you the prices of tuna that I found in the Ann Arbor, Michigan store in June 2023.

Chicken of the Sea Chunk Light Tuna$15.99 for 12/7oz can$.19/per oz
Chicken of the Sea Albacore Tuna$17.49 for 8/7oz cans$.312/per oz
    Kirkland Albacore Tuna$16.99 for 8/7oz cans$.303/per oz
Wild Planet Albacore Tuna$16.49 for 6/5oz cans$.550/per oz
Safe Catch Yellowfin Ahi Tuna$12.99 for 6/5oz cans$.433/per oz

Five different options. The Chicken of the Sea brand chuck light tuna was the cheapest per ounce and the Safe Catch Yellowfin had the cheapest total cost.

    🙋 What's Albacore Tuna?

This is a very common tuna that you find in the grocery store. I see it all the time. So what is it?

First you can also see it under the name "longfin tuna".

Albacore is know for it's milder taste and firmer texture than other types of tuna. People like to pick it out when they want to use it in something where they don't want a strong tuna flavor.

This type of tuna is considered a species of least concern, which means they are plenty available and they currently are not threatened to go extinct from overfishing. There was a time that they moved to near threatened but practices were put into place to preserve their populations.

Skipjack tuna is the most common variety and there is a chance if your can of tuna doesn't list the specific species that it's skipjack.

Costco offers Albacore in either the Wild Planet brand or their Kirkland store brand. The Wild Planet tuna is advertised as being sustainability pole & line caught. While I am not an expert on commercial fishing, I do know that this is important because with using this method over just using large nests, animals in the ocean are less likely to be injured.

    🟡 Yellowfin Ahi Tuna

Yellowfin and Ahi are the same thing. SafeCatch puts both names on their packages of tuna.

Yellowfin is described as having more flavor than Albacore but it's not the strongest flavored tuna there is. For that reason it's popular for it's versatility.

This was my wife's favorite tuna she has had so far. She described it as "Firm large flakes of tuna. It comes out of the can in one steak and then you can flake it as much as you'd like. Fresher. Less like cat food and more like a tuna steak."

Even my 5 year old daughter really loved it.

🍣 How to Use Costco Tuna

What are some options to use your canned tuna from Costco?

The favorite way to use it in our household is to add chopped up dill pickles and mayo to it along with freshly cracked black pepper. All of that can easily be had at any Costco.

Clear plastic containers filled with a dozen croissants each.

Head over to the bakery department and get a container of their croissants. They are perfect for making a tuna sandwich with. And you get 12 for $5.99 which is the best deal I have seen on fresh, store bought croissants.

You could make a "poke style bowl" with tuna from Costco. I did that with the Kirkland Tempura shrimp (check that post for the recipe). Just use tuna instead of the fried shrimp. It's also a great way to use up those large bags of mini cucumbers you find in the produce section.

Tuna patties are another family favorite. For that you would need:

    • Canned tuna
    • Breadcrumbs (you should be able to find Panko breadcrumbs)
    • Eggs
    • Flour
    • Any seasonings you like
Bottles of Bachan's Japanese BBQ Sauce at Costco

I have seen in some Costco stores Bachan's Original Japanese BBQ Sauce. Soy sauce is the base of it. It's so good and would be good with the tuna patties.
