The perfect, fast fall apple dessert is a single serving apple cobbler that you make in your air fryer. If you got about 20 minutes, you can be enjoying this dessert super fast. Try it with different apple all fall long!

When apple season hits I have to start baking right away. I just can't help myself. Lucky for me the temperatures have been more fall like and less summer like lately so I have gotten off to a start with my baking.

But even if it was super hot out having an air fryer to make a dessert in a big help. Anytime I can avoid turning the oven on and heating up the whole place in the summer time, the better.

With that being said, let me share with you a recipe for an apple cobbler made in the air fryer.

    Why Make This Recipe?

This recipe is made to be scaled. Want just a single serving apple cobbler? This is perfect. One apple per cobbler. If you want to make more it's super easy to do. No math skills needed. I think it's always easier to make more than to scale down a recipe to make less.

What also is great about this recipe is you can test out different varieties of apples. Find out which one you like best for baking. As a food blogger, of course I appreciate being able to test out a variety of different apples so I can share with you guys how they do when baked. But even for the everyday person you can have a chance throughout the apple season to discover your new favorite baking apple.

Gravenstein apples that are red and green on a picnic table.

    Ingredients

You only need 4 ingredients for this recipe but you can add a 5th if you like some spices in your cobbler. Cinnamon of course is the top choice but some nutmeg (freshly grated only please!), ground ginger, or ground cloves are welcomed as well. What about making a cobbler with fennel seed? Well this is your perfect chance to find out if you think that would be a good flavor combo!

Here is what you will need.

    • 1 apple
    • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
    • ⅛ cup dark brown sugar
    • 2 tablespoons butter
    • ground cinnamon or other spice to taste (optional)

You can use any kind of apple you have on hand for this. It's matter of learning what you like. I don't think apples like Gala or Fuji are great for this because they are sweet and don't offer much in terms of balancing out the sugar in the topping.

The apple I used when photographing this recipe was Gravenstein. It's a sweet-tart well flavored apple that held up well when baked. It was soft but it wasn't apple sauce, you could still see the slices. Often people ask if Honeycrisp can be used for baking and I say you can use it if you like. If it's one of those super large Honeycrisp you may be able to make two.

What I think would make for the prettiest apple cobbler is using an apple with a red flesh such as Pink Pearl, Hidden Rose, Lucy Glo, or Lucy Rose. Those apples are all tart or sweet-tart so they make great choice for baking.

You also could make this same cobbler but with peaches as well.

    Instructions

Pretty simple to do. Grab a bowl big enough to fit your flour, brown sugar, and butter. You will need to get your hands in it to mix it up and have some room so it doesn't get all over your table or counter.

Brown sugar, flour, butter, and cinnamon combined in a green bowl.

Now it's time to get your hands dirty! Sure you can do this in a food processor or with some kind of tool but your fingers are really the best tool you got for the job and you don't need to store them anywhere just wash them afterwards 🙂

With your fingertips rub the cubes of butter into the flour and brown sugar mixture. It will take some time in the beginning but as the butter softened and incorporates it will become easy. You know it's done when you don't see any more butter just clumps. And your clumps don't have to be all the same size. I adore the rustic look of small and larger clumps!

Preparing the apples is pretty simple, especially because I believe you don't need to peel the apples! I never have any issue eating a dessert with apples that aren't peeled in it. The skin gets soft enough to not bother me in the slightest. Why peel if you don't need to. That's the best part of this recipe to me! Just core the apple and cut the apple into slices. Thick or thin it's your choice. I like to go somewhere in between.

A single serving apple cobbler in the basket of an air fryer.

What kind of container do you need to cook your cobbler in? It has to fit in your air fryer and be the right size for an individual serving. I have found that a 4-inch small cake pan is the perfect choice. I own two of them so I can air fry one cobbler in each basket of my dual basket Ninji air fryer.

⏲️ Time & Temp - Air Fry at 325 degrees for 9-13 minutes or until the top has browned and the apples have softened.

You want to keep a close eye on your cobbler so that you don't burn it. It's also important than the top of it doesn't touch the heating element or you will have a burned topped cobbler.

Also it's important to leave the insert in your air fryer basket. This will allow the heat to circulate all around the cobbler.

    Ingredients

    • 1 whole apple cored, sliced into pieces
    • 2 tablespoons cold butter cut into cubes
    • ⅛ cup brown sugar
    • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
    • ground cinnamon to taste

    Instructions

    • In a mixing bowl, combine the brown sugar and flour. Add the butter. Using your hands rub the butter into the sugar/flour mix until it’s the texture of very coarse cornmeal. Add cinnamon to taste.
    • Slice the apple into slices. You don't need to peel them. Then arrange them in a small pan that will fit into your air fryer without the apples hitting the top. Sprinkle the sugar/flour mixture on top of the fruit.
    • Put into your air fryer at 325 degrees for 9-13 minutes or until the top is brown.
    • Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before digging in. This can be eaten hot, cold, or at room temperature whatever you love best.
